Accrington Grammar School Old Boys

Did you attend Accrington Grammar School?  If so Bob Dobson, Membership Secretary of the Accrington Grammar School Old Boys, would like to hear from you.  There are currently 366 members registered at the moment.  There are no fees payable.  There is an annual dinner in November each year and a social event each Spring.  Time marches on and none of us are getting any younger.  Personally, although I did not appreciate it at the time, I now know I owe AGS a lot.  So, if you are or know someone that was an Accrington Grammar school boy get in touch with Bob Dobson.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
An Accrington Grammar School Old Boys web site will open on 1st September 2009.  It has been thought for some time that there is a need for such a site.  Many old pupils are scattered around the country and indeed, from feedback given us, around the world.  It is hoped that the new site will act as a focal point to allow old friends to get reacquainted.

Please contact Bob Dobson from here by  Email Bob Dobson for progress, updates and the link to the site once it is registered.  Also, it is hoped, the site will be announced via the local press late August early September.

Baxenden's Watering Holes
Together we have gathered quite a bit of information regarding the above.  We have a good idea of the age of The Railway, The Conservative Club, The Liberal Club, Hill Street WMC and the Alma.  As always there are gaps which we haven't been able to fill.  I wonder if anyone can help with the following queries?

The Beehive - Has anyone any information as to how old this pub is?  Looking at the building and nearby cottages I would guess it was open well before 1800.

The Dog and Partridge - The Inn and the Innkeeper appear on the UK 1841 Census so the 'Dog' must be one of the oldest pubs in Baxenden.  Anyone any ideas how old?

The Bay Horse - The Bay Horse  has a 'smithy' attached which could indicate that coach horses were attended too in the past.  On the other hand the 'smithy' may just have been a convenient location for a local blacksmith.  It just gives a hint that the Bay Horse could (again) be quite an old pub.  Any ideas would be welcomed.
New InformationManchester Road was built by
Blind Jack Metcalf o’ Knaresborough in 1791/92. The old road becoming what is now known as ‘Back Lane’. In 1848 the coach fare was 1 shilling for the four mile journey from Haslingden to Accrington. The Bay Horse pub used to be a former coaching house and one of the four main ones in the area.
It's not a quantum leap to make a guess that the Bay Horse could have been built around the same time as Manchester Road - circa 1791'ish or in round figures 1800.
